How to choose
Pick a group for bloom time. The North American Lily Society says Asiatics are among the earliest to bloom, martagons flower with them, and trumpets and Aurelians fill July and August.
Pick a group for your site. Martagons handle shade best, according to the North American Lily Society, and Orientals want acidic, humus-rich soil.
Check the height. NC State Extension puts Asiatics under 3 feet and Orientals up to 8 feet.
Frequently asked questions
Are lilies poisonous to cats?
Yes. The FDA says the whole plant is toxic to cats, including pollen and vase water, and a small amount can cause fatal kidney failure in less than 3 days. If a cat may have eaten any part, call a veterinarian or pet poison control at once.
How deep should lilies be planted?
The North American Lily Society advises about 3 to 4 inches of soil over small bulbs and 4 to 6 inches over larger ones, and no more than 1 inch over Madonna lilies.
