Perennial flowers

Perennial flowers in our records that can stay in the ground over winter in USDA zone 7 or colder. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes herbaceous perennials as plants that generally live for three or more seasons, with tops that usually die back to the ground each fall. Dahlias are left out because their records put them in zone 8 and warmer. Use the filters to narrow the list, and open a plant for its full record. The table below compares every plant we list side by side.

How to choose

  1. Check the Hardiness column first. The coldest zone listed should be the same as or lower than your own zone.
  2. Match the Sun column to your site. Penn State Extension says most flowers need at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun every day.
  3. Compare the Bloom time column. Clemson Cooperative Extension notes that some perennials flower for only a few weeks, so planting several with different bloom times spreads the color over the season.

Frequently asked questions

Why are dahlias not on this list?

Dahlias are hardy only in USDA zone 8 and warmer, and this list takes perennials that stay in the ground over winter in zone 7 or colder. You will find them with the other dahlias.

Do perennials need dividing?

Clemson Cooperative Extension says most perennials eventually become overcrowded and require division. The RHS adds that dividing clumps is one way to multiply them.
