How to choose

  1. Check the Hardiness column against your USDA zone before anything else.
  2. Match the Sun column to your site, since a plant that deer leave alone still needs the right light.
  3. Compare the Bloom time column if you want flowers across the season.

Frequently asked questions

Will deer leave these plants alone?

Not always. Rutgers NJAES says no plant is deer proof and recommends the Rarely Damaged and Seldom Severely Damaged groups for landscapes prone to deer damage. It adds that success depends on local deer populations and weather conditions.

Is the rating for each variety?

No. The Rutgers NJAES list rates these plants as a whole genus (for example "Paeonia sp."), so every variety of that genus carries the same rating in our records.
