Fringed tulip varieties

Fringed tulips are single-flowered tulips whose tepals are edged with crystal-shaped fringes, flowering mid-season or late on stems of variable length. The RHS describes the fringe as ranging from a simple pinked border to thick, interlocking fingers. The table below compares every variety we list side by side.

How to choose

  1. Look at the Color column. A bicolor or blend is recorded with every color the seller names.

  2. Compare the Height column. Stem length varies across the group.

  3. Check the bloom time. Fringed tulips open mid-season or late, so they can bridge the gap between the Triumph and peony tulips.

Frequently asked questions

When do fringed tulips bloom?

Mid-season or late. In the RHS trial of Lily-flowered and Fringed tulips, some entries flowered for almost five weeks in cool, moist, overcast weather.

Will these tulips come back every year?

Not reliably. John Scheepers lists species tulips, Kaufmanniana and Greigii hybrids and Giant Darwin Hybrids as the tulips that may return for repeat years, and only where they are happy and never disturbed. Most gardeners treat other groups as a one-season planting.
