How to choose

  1. Compare the Hardiness column with your zone. NC State Extension gives zones 3 to 8 for Echinacea purpurea, and the Chicago Botanic Garden says hybrid cultivars are commonly rated for zones 4 to 9.

  2. Look at the Bloom time column. Clemson Extension says coneflowers bloom in midsummer and flower sporadically until frost.

  3. Compare the Height column to place each plant in a border.

Frequently asked questions

Are pink coneflowers drought tolerant?

Once established. NC State Extension says Echinacea purpurea is drought tolerant once established, and Clemson Extension describes coneflowers as drought and heat tolerant once established.

Should I leave the seed heads on?

NC State Extension advises leaving some flower heads on so birds can eat the seeds, and names American goldfinches in particular. Clemson Extension suggests delaying deadheading for the same reason.
